The Myths about Pasteurized Milk and The Benefits of Fermented Milk

You've seen the billboards. Kids with milk moustaches of all races. GOT MILK? Milk. It does a body good. A child who drinks milk is supposed to be strong and healthy. Well, that depends on the kind of milk you are talking about.

The myth : Milk is good for everyone and promotes strong bones

Reality #1: The pasteurized milk you buy in the grocery store causes more health problems than health benefits.

Reality #2: Raw milk and fermented milk and fermented milk products have more nutritional benefits than pasteurized milk.

The pediatricians and the government officials and the billboards all are screaming, “The child who drinks lowfat milk is getting lots of calcium for strong bones.” Moms and Dads working hard to survive don't have time to stop and think about it. They just go along with the status quo.

When a child's family in my preschool announced that they were eliminating milk from their diet to stop ADHD behavior, I wondered how they would ever get enough calcium. They informed me that there are other foods, like spinach, that supply the body with calcium.

My husband even scolds me because our son doesn't drink milk for breakfast.

Milk: It doesn't do a body good

Modern pasteurized milk puts a tremendous strain on the body's digestive system.

It has been heated to extreme temperatures to kill bacteria. In the process, all the pathogen fighting lactic acid bacteria. This milk is not resistant to pathogens, such as salmonella. Also, all the enzymes that help the body assimilate nutrients, including calcium, are destroyed. The pancreas must work overtime to produce these enzymes. More than 50% of Vitamin C is lost. Up to 80% of water soluble vitamins are lost. Vitamin B 12, which is necessary for healthy blood and a properly functioning nervous system, is lost. As if that wasn't enough, then they add chemicals to restore taste and remove odor. They add synthetic vitamin D 2 or D 3. Vitamin D 2 is is toxic and has been linked to heart disease. Vitamin D 3 is difficult to absorb. Pasteurization also alters lactose, making it more readily absorbable. This can lead to milk allergies and diabetes.

The cows that produce our milk have been genetically engineered. They are given high protein feed and are selectively breeded to produce cows with abnormal pituitary glands. These freaks of nature pump out three or four times as much milk as the cows raised a century ago. Many cows are given genetically engineered growth hormones. These cows are prone to many diseases and must be given frequent doses of antibiotics. These antibiotics and growth hormones pass into the child who drinks milk.

Is that what you want in your child's body? Got Milk? No, thanks.

FERMENTED MILK: Let's get back to our Grassroots

Dr. Weston Price, a dentist in the 1930's, traveled around the world to look at health and eating habits of isolated traditional societies. He found that all healthy milk-drinking populations consumed raw milk, raw cultured milk or raw cheese from normal, healthy animals who ate fresh grass or fodder.

The practice of fermenting, or souring milk is common in almost all traditional groups that keep herds.

This process predigests the casein, or milk protein, which causes many milk allergies and is often linked to ADHD behavior. The fermentation process also breaks down lactose.

Fermented milk products such as yogurt and kefir, are more easily tolerated by people who cannot drink fresh milk. Butter and cream contain little lactose or casein and are usually tolerated by most people. Fermented , or soured butter and cream are more digestible. Cheeses made from raw milk contain a full range of enzymes and are more easily digested than the cheeses made by pasteurized milk. Cheeses made from raw milk also contain the full range of vitamins and minerals necessary for healthy blood and a properly functioning nervous system.

The milk loving bacteria, lactobacillus acidophilus (link to probiotics for children) , in these cultured products actually restores a healthy balance of flora to the intestine. When there is an overgrowth of yeast in the intestine, this leads to attention problems, mood swings, aggressive behavior, sugar cravings and allergies, which are commonly associated with ADHD.

You can make cultured products such as kefir, yogurt, buttermilk and cultured cream with pasteurized (not ultra-pasteurized) milk. The best milk has not been homogenized. My son and I make kefir smoothie popsicles all the time.

Pasteurized Milk vs Raw and Fermented Milk

Raw milk and fermented milk products restore a healthy balance of flora to the intestine. Failing to purge the intestine of yeast is like putting fertilizer on weeds in your garden. First, you must dig out the weeds or put mulch on the weeds, then add fertilizer to the soil.

Modern pasteurized, homogenized milk is no good for anybody. It is linked to milk allergies, diabetes, and ADHD behavior. Today's Holsteins are genetically engineered freaks of nature that eat food they were not created to eat. Only time will tell the long term effects of the antibiotics they are given and the chemicals added to their milk.
